Furniture Factory Verification in China
Quick answer
Furniture sourcing has a specific structural risk: the impressive showroom and the actual production site are frequently different places owned by different companies, and finishing processes are commonly subcontracted. A live visit at the stated production address, rather than the showroom, is what separates a manufacturer from a well-presented trading operation. Material and durability claims remain a testing question.
Material claims are the hardest thing to verify visually
Solid wood versus veneer, hardwood species, foam density, leather versus bonded leather, board grade and formaldehyde emission class are all claims that look identical on camera. A visit can show you the incoming material store and the labels on it, which is genuine evidence, but the definitive answer to a material claim is a test report on the delivered goods.
Subcontracted processes
Cutting, upholstery, spraying, polishing, metal frames and glass are routinely split across several workshops. A supplier who shows you a clean assembly hall may still be sending the entire finishing stage out. Ask directly which processes happen on this site, and ask to see the ones the supplier claims are in-house.
- Which processes are performed here, and which leave the site?
- Where is spraying and finishing done, and can it be seen?
- Who performs upholstery, and is it the same for every order?
Showroom versus production site
This is the recurring finding in the furniture category. Showrooms in Foshan are commercial spaces, sometimes shared, sometimes belonging to trading companies representing multiple factories. Nothing about that is illegitimate — but a showroom visit is not a factory visit, and any live visit you book should name the production address explicitly and confirm before the day that the representative will be taken there.
Capacity and what it looks like
Useful capacity signals are unglamorous: the size of the raw material yard, how much work-in-progress is stacked, whether the finished-goods warehouse is full or empty, how many spray booths exist and whether they are running. These are indicative, not conclusive, and a quiet week is not evidence of a failing supplier.
Packaging is a real failure mode in this category
Furniture damage in transit is common and expensive, and packaging quality is visible during a visit. Look at the corner protection, carton grade, edge banding and how flat-pack items are boxed, and ask to see packaging for an existing export customer. Get the packaging specification written into the proforma invoice.
Where verification stops for you
The package we would usually recommend
The showroom-versus-production question is answered on site and almost nowhere else, which makes the live visit the highest-value single step in this category. Pair it with a verification report where you have not yet confirmed the invoicing entity.
